ZIRCAR Refractory Composites, Inc. produces a comprehensive line of advanced high performance ceramic-ceramic composite materials and related products. Our materials are used around the world in the most demanding thermal, structural and electrical insulating applications ranging in temperatures from 600°C(1112°F) to 1650°C(3002°F). For over twenty-five years, we have been a problem-solver working with our customers to resolve their thermal management problems. We have developed products that have become industry standards for induction melting, forging and heat treating applications, investment casting, glass processing, hot pressing, as well as many high temperature electrical applications.

Refractory Sheet Type-100

A Case History

ZIRCAR RS-100 provides superior performance than steel in incinerator housing application.

Used as the roof on a gas fired high temperature fume incinerator at a major manufacturer of advanced ceramic materials, ZIRCAR RS-100 has proven to provide significantly longer life than a comparable thickness of steel. The furnace process involved generates a highly corrosive compound, which must be combusted prior to its emission from the plant. When the corrosive vapor in the furnace chamber is allowed to penetrate through the folded ceramic fiber blanket module insulation and reaches the steel housing or when the vapor condenses on the steel it accelerates the corrosion of the steel. In the manufacturer’s plant two furnaces with incinerators are cycled side by side 24 hours a day. Incinerator temperatures reach 2000°F.

At one point the safety alarms mounted on the roof of one of the incinerators began ringing. Upon investigation the incinerator roof which was made of steel had become so hot due to the fact that the stainless steel to which the ceramic anchors were mounted had corroded away to the point that the insulation modules of the roof caved in. Had the manufacturer not had a safety device tied to the incinerator casing temperature a catastrophe might not have been avoided.

The roof of the other incinerator (which actually was the prototype of the system) was made of ZIRCAR Refractory Sheet Type-100. It was as strong and flat as it was when it was installed almost 5 years prior. The incinerator with the corroded steel roof had been in service for only 2 years.

The RS-100 has an Alumina Ceramic matrix and is highly resistant to corrosion. With Flexural strengths of 8000psi and compressive strengths of 10,000psi and maximum service temperature of 2300°F it makes an excellent high temperature furnace housing material. It’s high dielectric properties and the additional benefit because electric termination and elements can be bolted directly to it. Manufactured in standard size sheets up to 36" x 36" in thickness from 1/8" to 1" ZIRCAR RS-100 is easily machined to exacting dimensional tolerances.
